Connecting past and present women who have served in the Australian Defence Force with social support, resources & information
Aussie Heroes has been up and running since January 2012 but it began with Jan-Maree Ball sending quilts and laundry bags, with the help of her quilt group, to one particular soldier and his team in late 2011.
Carla Edwards launched the project in November 2022 on the Central Coast of NSW after recognising the lack of visibility for women who have served Australia.
What began with seven women has grown into a national movement, with more than 200 women photographed and interviewed across the country — from Mackay to Hobart, Adelaide and many regional communities in between. Over 50 women are currently on the waitlist, with Western Australia and the Northern Territory next on her journey, pending funding.
In February 2024, portraits of 24 NSW women were exhibited at the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park, Sydney — the first in a planned series of capital city exhibitions. The next major showcase will be held at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, with the Victorian exhibition running from November 2025 to mid-2026.
